‘Aa’ishah said: “The sun was eclipsed at the time of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), so the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) led the people in prayer. He stood for a long time, then he made rukoo’ for a long time, then he stood again for a long time but shorter than the first time, then he made rukoo’ for a long time but shorter than the first. Then he prostrated for a long time, then in the second rak’ah he did the same as he had done in the first. Then he finished, and the eclipse was over. He addressed the people, first praising Allaah, then he said: ‘The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allaah. They do not become eclipsed for the death or life of anyone. If you see that, then pray to Allaah, say Takbeer (“Allahu akbar”), pray and give in charity.’ Then he said, ‘O Ummah of Muhammad, by Allâh there is no one more jealous than Allaah when His slave, male or female, commits zina (adultery or fornication). O Ummah of Muhammad, if you knew what I know you would laugh little and weep much.’” (Saheeh al-Bukhaari, 986)

This is a concise version of this book, edited by Shaykh Saleem al- Hilaalee. This book was translated into English by Daawood ibn Ronald Burbank. We ask Allaah, the Blessed and Most High, to make this work beneficial to the Muslims. Those who do not give precedence to anything before Allaah and His Messenger, so that they may unsheathe the sword of knowledge, which is: ‘Allaah says… His Messenger says…’ And ride upon the back of truth, which is acquiring knowledge along with its proof. Thus expelling from Islaam the alterations of those going beyond bounds, the false claims of the deceptive, the misinterpretations of the ignorant and the bigotry of the blind- followers: those who pick and choose from the Qur’aan and divide up their Deen into sects and become separate groups.

This book, Al-Fawaid: A Collection of Wise Sayings is one of the well-known compilations of Imam Shams Ad-Dm Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah, who is well known by the name Ibn Al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy upon him). This blessed book is not like others that simply contain sections, chapters and themes, but it consists of the elevated thoughts that Allah, Exalted be He, bestows upon some of His servants as He wills. So whenever any of these scattered pearls of wisdom occurred to the Imam, he would immediately record them. I am sure that he did not sit down and write this book in one or two weeks, but surely it was developed over a long period of time. Indeed the best speech is the speech of Allaah and the best guidance is that of Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wassallam) and the worst of affairs are the newly invented matters in the religion, for every newly invented matter is an innovation and every innovation is misguidance and all misguidance is in the hellfire. The Islamic Ummah has been tested for over half a century with successive defeats and most of the Ummah is heedless as to the reasons for such defeats and afflictions. Allaah says: “Say, “it is from yourselves (i.e. due to your sin).” {Aali-Imraan: 165} – And Allaah says: “And whatever strikes you of disaster – it is for what your hands have earned; but He pardons much.” {ash-Shooraa: 30}. If our Ummah, at an individual level and at a societal level, the rulers and the ruled, reflected on the Book of Allaah and acted by its rulings and divine laws it would have achieved the causes for victory over their enemies. This is so they know that the Sunnah of Allaah in His creation does not change or become substituted by the passing of the times and by the repetition of the times. This an Excellent work on what exactly will bring victory to the Muslim Ummah
